Ten Virgins: Confidently Prepared or Uncertain?

There has never been a time when we need to be more aware of the times and seasons than we are in than now.  With the rapid technological developments over just the past 20 years and the explosion of information at our fingertips, our society is drifting further and further away from the living God.  Aren't we naturally more tempted to rely upon our own understanding rather then trusting God to determine our steps (Proverbs 3:5-6).  And as a result, churches in this land are bowing to the cultural norms in record numbers.  It seems a day doesn't go by that we hear of moral failures in leadership and churches gravitating to the sway of secular society.  This is the situation that surrounds us.  So what do we do about it?

I suggest that there is an urgent need for a wake up call!  And to this point, a very valuable lesson taught by Jesus in Matthew 25:1-13 drives this message home.  Ask yourself, are you confidently prepared for Jesus' return on the cataclysmic day of the Lord?  While it's important to read this parable, the historical significance of the teaching often times escapes us.  A year or so back I ran across a podcast that provided amazing clarity on this critical message of our times.  You and access it through this link:  The Ten Virgins.   

At then end of this podcast, there is fascinating discussion on the sixteenth chapter of the Didache (meaning "teaching") pertaining to the end of the age.  Most scholars believe this Gentile discipleship manual was written at the end of the first century.  The longer title is The Teaching of the Lord to the Gentiles through the Twelve Apostles.  The Didache enjoyed popularity among the early believers.  Early church writers mentioned it and quoted from it frequently.1  It offers a unique Jewish perspective on the apostles teachings related to the "Way of Life" for the proper functioning of Gentile church.

What is the Gospel of the Kingdom?

Jesus used the phrase, "the Gospel of the Kingdom",  five times in the new testament.  And, perhaps most notable, the following verse: This good news of the kingdom will be proclaimed in all the world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.  Matthew 24:14 It's an interesting comment, but what did he mean?  To Jewish believers, it would not have been a foreign concept.  You see, in Jesus's day, they were anticipating a time when their messiah (the Davidic King) would bring forth a kingdom era, overshadowing all the kingdoms of the world.  However, many Jews of that day were shortsighted.  They had in mind supplanting Roman oppression, rather than the much broader view supported by the following verses:  The kingdom, dominion, and greatness of the kingdoms under all of heaven will be given to the people, the holy ones of the Most High. The Priceless Find

The kingdom of heaven is like treasure , buried in a field, that a man found and reburied. Then in his joy he goes and sells everything he has and buys that field.
